Care for Your Diamonds

Diamonds and precious stones are very hard and durable and with reasonable care their beauty and brilliance is everlasting. Diamond rings can be passed down from one generation to the next. However, environmental factors such as dust, pollution and everyday products like cosmetics, perfume, some foods and juices can dull the brilliance of diamonds and stain the gold and platinum settings.

DiamondExchange has prepared the following care instructions to help you preserve the beauty of your precious diamond rings and extend their life:

  1. Protect your diamond rings from damage by not wearing them during rigorous work or sporting activities.
  2. Avoid your diamond rings coming into contact with hard surfaces, which may cause scratches, dents, loosening of the setting or even loss of the precious diamonds. Diamonds should not come into contact with other diamonds or gemtones, and your rings and fine jewellery should be stored in a jewellery box with separate compartments, preferably lined with a soft fabric. Even diamonds, the hardest natural substance known to man, can be cracked or chipped on their fine edges if handled carelessly.
  3. All diamond rings will experience general wear and tear over time and should be sent with your instructions to the DiamondExchange GPO Box 830, Melbourne, Australia to be regularly examined and if necessary, detailed. If your diamond ring has been dropped on a hard surface or has suffered a severe knock and is causing you concern, have it examined by the experts at DiamondExchange as soon as possible.
  4. Gold and platinum will occasionally require polishing to remove surface scratches and also settings may need tightening.
  5. Diamonds have an affinity with grease. This explains why finger marks, skin cream, soap and detergent adhere so readily to the diamonds’ surface and mar their brilliance. So that your diamonds are looking their most beautiful, they should be wiped with a clean cloth daily.
  6. When diamond rings are worn constantly it is inevitable that dust, soap and lotions accumulate in the settings and reduce the fire and beauty of your precious diamonds. To maintain their original beauty, clean your rings regularly with water, liquid detergent and a toothbrush, rinsing in cold, clean water afterwards, then dry with a soft cloth.
  7. For special occasions send your diamond rings per registered post to DiamondExchange, GPO Box 830, Melbourne, Australia, to be thoroughly checked and cleaned by our fully qualified jewellers.
