    Diamond Clarity Explained

Diamond Exchange knows that when it comes to buying a diamond, it’s not just about the size or cut, but also its clarity.

Clarity is probably the easiest of the four diamond characteristics (4 Cs) to understand as it refers to the presence or absence of natural impurities, better known as inclusions, within the diamond. While most of these inclusions are microscopic and have no discernible effect on the stone’s beauty or brilliance, the most desirable diamonds are those which have no inclusions visible to the naked eye.

    DEx I001

In regards to clarity grades, the only universal diamond clarity grading system is that of the world-renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the same stringent one that Diamond Exchange utilises. The size, position and colour of inclusions play a role in giving a diamond its clarity grading but a general rule of thumb to remember is that the fewer inclusions a diamond has, the higher its clarity grading.

At Diamond Exchange, we only offer diamonds graded FL – SI (Flawless to Slightly Included), which are the highest clarity grades available.

    Diamond Clarity Grades

    FL

Flawless: No inclusions internally or externally. Diamonds of this grade are extremely rare.

    IF

Internally Flawless: No inclusions internally. Diamonds of this grade are also exceptionally rare.

    VVS1, VVS2

Very Very Slightly Included: Slight imperfections invisible to the naked eye and very difficult to see even after 10x magnification. Diamonds of this grade are of extremely high quality.

    VS1, VS2

Very Slightly Included: Some imperfections that are not visible to the naked eye. Diamonds of this grade are of excellent quality and are less expensive than those of the VVS1 or VVS2 grades.

    SI1, SI2

Slightly Included: Internal and external inclusions are visible under 10x magnification. Diamonds of this grade are of very good value.

    I1, I2, I3

Included: Imperfections which are visible and quite evident to the naked eye. Diamond Exchange does not carry diamonds of this clarity grade.
