Engagement Rings
Who chooses the engagement ring design?
Traditionally the young man chose an engagement ring and set up a romantic proposal. These days more and more engagement rings are selected and designed by the ladies, possibly a more practical approach as they will be wearing the engagement ring. The Diamond Exchange has designed an elegant proposal capsule for an ICE diamond that allows the young man to propose with the diamond and allows the lady to design her own engagement ring.
The Budget You will need to create a practical budget for your engagement ring. It has become a bit of a tradition for engagement rings to be budgeted at about 2 months salary.
The Diamonds Choosing the diamond is the most important consideration you will need to make. Carefully read the diamond grading section, especially diamond cut, and then choose a diamond from our database. If you need advise on the correct way to choose a diamond for your engagement ring, please feel free to contact a Diamond Exchange consultant.
The Metal
Engagement rings are usually made from 18k or 14(USA) yellow or white gold and also platinum. Platinum is becoming increasingly popular for engagement rings but is a lot more expensive. You may also want to consider two or three tones using combinations of white, yellow and rose gold or combining gold with platinum.
The Design Choosing designs for engagement rings is rather a complex matter. Its usually a matter of personal preference. If you really have no idea it may help if you browse our websites engagement ring section for some basic ideas then discuss these with our jewellery designer. There are however some design considerations we like take into account when designing engagement rings.
- Most important is the diamonds in your engagement rings must be securely mounted; Bezel setting is the most secure suits a limited amount of designs. A six claw setting on an engagement ring is usually more secure than four claws. Four claws can of course be made heavier. This can sometimes make a round diamond looks square though. An interesting idea if you prefer the brilliance of a round diamond but want a square look to your engagement ring.
- Choose a practical design that suits your lifestyle, rings with diamonds set ultra high are prone to damage. Choose a ring weight in balance with the size of the largest diamond, too heavy is usually better than too light.
- Take extra care when designing an engagement ring with a Princess cut. The corners of the Princess cut diamonds are prone to chipping.
