Diamonds must be cut with perfect proportions to maximize the amount of light being reflected through the top of the diamond. If a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow it “leaks” light out the bottom and sides, causing the diamond to lose its sparkle. Perfect Symmetry
The symmetry of a diamond relates to the exactness of shape and placement of the facets. If the shape of the facets is slightly irregular, or if the facets are out of alignment, it caused a misdirection of light, as shown in the 1st image below. The polish of a diamond can also affect its brilliance. If a diamond is not polished properly it can leave fine polishing lines across the facets. When a diamond, which has been cut and polished perfectly, is viewed through the pavilion (bottom) using an “Ice-Scope”, a beautiful pattern of 8 hearts can be seen. When the diamond is viewed through the crown (top) a dramatic configuration of 8 arrows is visible.
