GIA Certification 101: Investing in love and diamonds

What is a GIA certified diamond?

GIA certified diamonds undergo an assessment at the Gemological Institute of America to create a unique diamond grading report. The report (or diamond certificate) accompanies the diamond and lists the various attributes of your stone. Details of size, colour, clarity and proportions are all specified within the report. GIA certification gives reassurance when it comes to accurate diamond grading. This is especially relevant when it comes to establishing the value of your diamond.

Knowledgeable buyers seek GIA certification when choosing their diamond engagement ring.

GIA is a non-profit, research and educational institution. Most noteworthy, they are impartial and independent. Their unbiased and impartial grading reports give confidence when purchasing a diamond. This is in stark contrast to untrustworthy certificates created in-house by many jewellery companies. Such reports offer little value or reassurance.

Why choose a GIA certified diamond?

Houses have deeds. Vehicles have titles and registrations. It makes sense that some form of documentation exists for something as precious as a diamond.

GIA certification provides a trusted standard for diamond grading, recognised across the World. GIA has graded some of the World's most famous diamonds—one example being the 69.42 carat Taylor Burton diamond.

Most GIA certified diamonds include a microscopic unique serial number laser inscribed on the girdle of the diamond. This report number can also be verified directly on the GIA website.

Buyer’s tip: Record and note your GIA certificate number and keep this safe. If you misplace your certificate in the future, a PDF copy of your report can always be downloaded via the GIA website for reference.

This photograph shows the same report number discreetly laser inscribed on the girdle of the diamond.

Why not buy a ready-made engagement ring?

For many buyers, the simplest way to purchase an engagement ring involves choosing a ready-made ring at a local jeweller. But to get the most out of life, you have to put in a little time and effort. This is very true when it comes to buying a diamond engagement ring. Many buyers settle for a ready-made engagement ring. Often with no certification at all. There are others who benefit by putting in some time to learn a little about diamonds. In return, they invest not only in love but the value and beauty of the diamond. The result appears in the final, breathtaking engagement ring. Choosing the perfect diamond is easier than you might think. At Diamond Exchange, the process is simplified beautifully. Our collection houses a dazzling array of spectacular diamonds and engagement rings. As a result, we make life easy for you when it comes to choosing an engagement ring.

Next, the engagement ring design

By comparison, we craft each engagement ring to accommodate the diamond itself. This small but significant factor makes a tremendous difference. Fancy shaped diamonds demand this individual attention due to the variation in proportions. Correct setting sizes ensure a perfect fit for each diamond. Meticulous attention to detail blends with substantial build quality. Once completed, the finished ring design undergoes rigorous inspection ahead of delivery in perfect packaging.
