Caring For Your Jewellery

Any piece of jewellery like an engagement ring or diamond earrings should last a lifetime, and beyond. Every item of jewellery sold by Diamond Exchange is carefully handcrafted for durability and strength, and with a little care and maintenance will stay looking just as beautiful as the day you bought it.

Care

To best protect your jewellery, remove it before participating in activities that can cause damage. This may include:

• Rigorous work

• Sport/Swimming or showering

• Cleaning/Cooking with corrosive substances

Avoid knocking your jewellery against hard surfaces or exposing it to excessive force.

Cleaning

Jewellery that is worn frequently is constantly exposed to oils, dirt and various products (e.g. moisturiser, hairspray). Cleaning jewellery regularly can prevent build-up of grime and dirt. It is easy to give jewellery a basic clean at home. There are a number of ways to do this:

• Wash and brush gently in a bowl of warm water and mild detergent.

• Soak in 1 part ammonia and 5 parts cold water for 3-5 minutes. Repeat, and pat dry.

• Dip in liquid jewellery cleaner. Always follow the instructions.

• Ultra-clean with an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner. Again, ensure all instructions are followed.

Whichever way you choose to clean your jewellery, ensure it is completely dry before storing.

Never use abrasive or harsh cleaning techniques. Many different jewellery cleaning ideas circulate online, with forums recommending everything from toothpaste to baking soda. These can cause damage to your jewellery and should be avoided at all costs.

Professional Maintenance

Diamond jewellery should be inspected annually by a qualified jeweller to ensure settings are secure. This is especially important if jewellery is worn daily, not just on special occasions. A jeweller will also be able to polish your jewellery and treat any tarnishing, scratches or other damage.

Some types of metal, such as white gold, need to be replated regularly to maintain its strength and appearance. Ensure you know your jewellery well so you know what unique needs it may have: read our Education Section for all the information you need on different types of metal, different settings and cuts of diamonds.

Storage

Items of diamond jewellery should be stored separately to avoid scratching. When stored correctly, diamond necklaces and earrings will not tangle. Pouches or a soft-lined box with compartments are ideal for this purpose. Jewellery boxes should be kept in a cool, dry location.

When travelling, a good quality travel case will keep your jewellery well protected.

Insurance

We recommend all items of jewellery are insured against theft or damage. Consider adding your jewellery to your home insurance coverage or taking out an insurance policy specifically for your jewellery. Ensure you know exactly what is covered and what is not. We recommend Q Report for jewellery insurance, since they specialise in insuring jewellery.

With Q Report you will get:

• 12 months worldwide cover

• Annual revaluation

• A low, fixed $100 excess, and 125% • 150% cover in case replacement costs more than expected.
