Hearts and Arrows
Hearts and Arrows: Hearts and Arrows is a visual phenomena present in most well-cut diamonds. When a well-cut diamond is viewed from the bottom with a specialised lens, a beautiful pattern of eight hearts is visible. When looking from the top, a dramatic pattern of eight arrows is visible.
Japanese jewellers were the first to discover this "hearts and arrows" kaleidoscopic effect when a round brilliant cut diamond was examined through a special viewer. As the Japanese started to refine their polishing techniques, the cutting style slowly gained popularity and was picked up by other cutting houses around the world.
